Woking residents achieved a milestone at the end of 2011 as the borough's recycling figures started to creep above the 60% mark.
In November, the total reached 65% and 60.1% was recorded in a previous month to take the figure above the 60% mark for the first time. Woking Conservatives pledged in 2010 and 2011 that it would help residents meet the 60% mark by the end of 2012.
While the monthly figures have topped 60%, Woking Borough Council is now being pushed to get the average for the year above that figure, while Woking Conservative considers what target to set for the future.
Cllr Beryl Hunwicks, Portfolio Holder for Waste and Recycling, said: “I am delighted to be able to report that we have broken through the huge 60% recycling level for the first time this winter. I would like to thank residents so much for their efforts in taking advantage of the mixed recycling, food waste and green waste schemes that we offer.
“Woking Conservatives pledged to help meet this target and we have. But we don’t rest now – we must continue to do even better and look to the next target.”
