Delighted pedestrians today expressed their happiness at the upgraded Basginstoke Canal footbridge - soon to become known as the Bedser Bridge - as it re-opened after a complete rebuild.
Horsell councillors Beryl Hunwicks and Tony Branagan were among the first people to get a look at the new bridge, which has a solid concrete floor and drainage, attractive lighting and strong metal railing to add to safety.
The bridge has also been designed to be free of steps, as specified by a motion made to Woking Borough Council by Conservative leader John Kingsbury last year. The new curving ramp up from the Brewery Road car park is landscaped and there are upgraded and covered bicycle stores.
Beryl said: "It is so good to see the footbridge and route through the car park and WWF site open today; it looks fantastic. I know that not everyone believed it would be open in early spring as we said - but here we are and I know residents will share our pleasure in the work that has been done."
Tony added: "I would like to thank the council officers who have worked on this project and the contractor too for ensuring it has run to schedule despite bad weather."
