Cllr Hilary Addison and Conservative campaigner Colin Kemp inspected the progress of works on Friday (January 25). While they appear to be progressing well, Hilary suggested that the amount of time — three months — set aside for the completion of the project is not acceptable to residents in her ward.
"We simply cannot have Triggs Lane closed for that length of time," said Hilary. "Residents in this area have come forward to speak to me about these works and they are very unhappy at the lack of activity on site and the inconvenience caused.
"A huge amount of traffic has built up in other parts of Woking because of it, especially during rush hour and getting back to homes along Goldsworth Road, Silversmiths Way and the Kingsway has been very difficult."
In response to enquiries from Surrey County Councillor Linda Kemeny, in whose St Johns ward the works are mostly based, Surrey County Council has confirmed that it has spoken with Southern Gas Networks about the issues raised.
Colin Kemp added: "The County Council has now assured us that the contractor will be on site from 7.30am to 8pm each day with only a few exceptions for weather and works schedules. They are also going to work on Saturdays and Sundays to help speed things along.
"While I would have preferred a single lane of traffic left open to keep things moving, I'm sure that everyone will be pleased to hear that a timely completion of the work is on the cards. From what residents have told me, it cannot come soon enough."
