Public realm enhancement works to the eastern end of Commercial Way (from Alexander House to Chapel Street) have been completed on time.
The scheme extends the enhancements already completed in Jubilee Square, Gloucester Walk and Mercia Walk, and the result is an attractive, tree-lined and clutter-free pedestrian boulevard for all to enjoy.
Following a consultation undertaken in March 2012, where the views of people who live, shop and work in Woking were sought, the following improvements have been made:
- new high quality granite paving, street furniture, lighting and cycle hoops
- new species of Sweetgum and Elm trees planted
- facade and canopy enhancements to Wolsey Place Shopping Centre
- a new square at the eastern end of Commercial Way adjacent to Mercia Walk and Church Path
- space for occasional specialist markets and events
Cllr Gary Elson, Portfolio Holder for Promoting the Local Economy, said: "Commercial Way is an important strategic gateway to Woking Town Centre connecting the expanding business districts to the south and west of the town, and intersecting the main north to south pedestrian route from Woking Railway Station to the shopping areas and canal. In its previous state, Commercial Way was run down and presented a poor impression of the town."
"Today, and in time for the Christmas shopping period, it looks lighter, brighter and a more attractive boulevard for pedestrians to walk through and shop. The front of the Wolsey Place Shopping Centre has also undergone significant canopy and facade improvements to match the appearance of the Centre in Jubillee Square, and aims to attract new retailers to this area of the town."
"A second phase of the Commercial Way enhancement works, from Chapel Street towards Cawsey Way, will be completed as part of the ongoing Wolsey Place asset management works and completed with the proposed Victoria Square development. Additionally, the old style paving stones around the eastern end of Commercial Way (near Cafe Nero and immediately outside Alexander House) will remain in situ until redevelopment works have been completed in and around Alexander House."
