Conservative councillor Carl Thomson was pleased to present a commemorative plaque to his local pub, the Sovereign’s in Woking, as a prize for being announced as the overall winner of Woking’s first ever Best Bar None awards.
Best Bar None is a national scheme supported by the Home Office aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises. It has been adopted by 100 towns and cities across the UK and by raising awareness amongst licensed premises of their responsibilities has helped to reduce binge drinking and promote a positive relationship between pubs, clubs and the police and local authorities.
As portfolio holder and chairman of Woking Borough Council’s licensing committee, Carl has a particular interest in promoting responsible drinking and working with the police to reduce anti-social behaviour in the town centre.
Carl said: “I’m pleased to be able to give this award to the Sovereign’s for their hard work in enforcing licensing conditions and making sure their pub sets a positive environment for customers and residents.”
“Having been out on detachment with Surrey Police to see problems caused by late night drinking, it’s really positive to see pub landlords and premises owners being so proactive and working so well with the police and council to prevent rowdiness and other types of disorder.”
